At the time he wrote this epistle, Silas and Timothy were with Paul. We know more about Timothy’s background than we do about Silas’. Paul may have led Timothy to faith in Christ on the first missionary journey 1 Tim. Timothy had recently returned to Paul in Corinth when Paul wrote this letter. He had come from Thessalonica bearing news of conditions in the church there 3: The Thessalonians knew all three men personally.

First Epistle to the Thessalonians

His insistence on the individuality of work clashes at least in tone with what we find in the Acts of the Apostles. Acts describes the Christian community as a state of ongoing sharing in which individuality hardly matters. Such advice almost seems to be unchristian as does his insistence on work. This leads to the question of how work and individuality can fit into the ideal Christian community.

1 Thessalonians 1 New International Version (NIV). 1 Paul, Silas [] and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace and peace to you. Thanksgiving for the Thessalonians’ Faith. 2 We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. 3 We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor.

He shall be free at home one year to be happy with his wife whom he has taken. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. These are what defile a person. But to eat with unwashed hands does not defile anyone. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. For if anyone thinks he is something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself.

But let each one test his own work, and then his reason to boast will be in himself alone and not in his neighbor. For each will have to bear his own load. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate. When he built a city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son, Enoch. But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

Because these letters are older than any of the gospel accounts of the life of Jesus, they constitute the most reliable source that we have today for information concerning the early history of the Christian movement. With few exceptions, these letters were written in response to conditions that existed in the particular churches with which Paul was associated.

Not until some time passed after Paul’s death were these letters circulated among the churches and read along with the Old Testament Scriptures as a part of regular worship services. Still later, they came to be regarded as inspired writings comparable to the sacred Scriptures of Judaism. To understand the contents of these letters, it is necessary to know something about the man who wrote them, as well as about the particular circumstances under which they were written.

Fortunately for us, considerable information along these lines is available within the letters themselves and can be supplemented by biographical accounts written by Luke, who was a companion of Paul, and included in the Book of Acts. Paul was a native of Tarsus, a city of considerable importance in the Greco-Roman world. He was a descendant of the Hebrew tribe of Benjamin and originally was named Saul, after Israel’s first king.

Raised in a Jewish home, he was taught the Old Testament Scriptures and brought up in strict accordance with the beliefs and practices of the Pharisee sect. As he grew older, he was sent to the city of Jerusalem, where he studied under Gamaliel, one of the leading Jewish rabbis of that day. Later, he returned to Tarsus and probably attended the Greek university located in that city, although we have no direct information about this. A crucial turning point in Paul’s career came after he returned to Jerusalem and began studies in preparation for becoming a rabbi.

April 18th, at Taking a look at a site that host several of his writings , it appears he does note some things I have learned about the pre-trib theory. Perhaps he was the initial source of that information. SteelGator April 18th, at 2: Thanks to IC for such great commentary. As a background, I grew up in a Reformed denomination, but I also went to numerous Christian School — most of them Independent Baptist.

Needless to say, I just sort of ignored the issue. With my pre trib friends, I could see where they were coming from, and with my Reformed brethren, I saw their Biblical perspective. My father-in-law and brother in law would just say negative things about the Reformed doctrine. They also did not like that my soon to be wife was attending a reformed church with me.

They also had well, not my father in law but my brother in law a problem that we were getting married in my reformed church. Long story short, for a few reasons and I believe today because we got married in a reformed church my Plymouth Brethren brother in law found a way to get overtime at work, so he had an excuse not to attend the wedding.

Authorship of the Pauline Epistles The authenticity of this epistle is still in widespread dispute. As Professor Ernest Best, New Testament scholar, explains the problem; if we only possessed Second Thessalonians few scholars would doubt that Paul wrote it; but when Second Thessalonians is put alongside First Thessalonians then doubts appear. There is a great dissimilarity between the two; this is not only one of words, small phrases and concepts but extends to the total structure of the two letters which is in addition different from what is taken to be the standard Pauline form.

At the same time the second letter is alleged to be less intimate and personal in tone than the first, and in some of its teaching, particularly in relation to eschatology , to conflict with the first. In 2 Thessalonians these begin with similar successions of nine Greek words, at 1: The opening letter section 1:

I was baptized at the tender age of ten and left the organization at eighteen when I moved from Pennsylvania to Colorado. So, shunning has impacted not only my life, but the next generation in my family as well. I still have the original shunning letter from my mother. I believe the Watchtower is committing family genocide in the name of God. Lying or using carefully chosen words camouflaged to deceive members and the general public is the hallmark of a cult.

My friend falls into the first category. She was never baptized and yet her mother and brother an elder in this religion are currently shunning her. Unbelievably, they also shun her developmentally disabled daughter. I fall into the second category. When the Watchtower says on their website: Although in an earlier version of their article that was available in on their old site at http: I and many others are living proof that they are lying about their shunning policy on their website.

Once I replied, I was officially disassociated, but as I mentioned earlier, the shunning had already started long before this. Consider the following quotes from official Watchtower literature:

He posted a sign by the suggestion box offering a cash award for the best answer to this question: Sexual standards were very low in the Roman Empire and in many parts of our society today they are not any higher. These Thessalonians lived in a pagan environment where sexual looseness was not only practiced openly but was encouraged.

Prostitution and extramarital sex was even a part of the heathen act of worship. Since this was the environment in which they had grown up, it is easy to see why they did not have strong convictions and high standards in this matter. Paul admonished the brethren to follow the instructions he had given them in following the Lord vv.

Paul begged them to avoid any form of sexual immorality vv. Christians are set apart for God and are to abstain from every form of sexual practice outside of marriage. All Church members except the apostles were scattered over the countryside of Judea [2] and Samaria [3]. While reverent men buried Stephen and mourned deeply over him, Saul later the apostle Paul harassed the Church bitterly. Those who were dispersed by this action went throughout the country, preaching the good news of the message as they went.
